Chinese people celebrate "Love Your Teeth Day" every year on 20 September to mark the importance of dental hygiene.
China is the country with the population of 1.3 billion people. The Chinese are a very nationalist nation that is why they have various events that relate to their tradition and culture. They even have their own lunar calendar along with the loads of national events and festivals. ”Love Your Teeth Day” is also one of those events which are celebrated by only the Chinese on September 20th annually. The aim of the event is to promote dental hygiene and increase awareness of oral health throughout the country. Massive campaigns have been carried out every year since 1989 to effectively achieve the goals of the event.
In ancient China, people would wrap parchment around painful teeth which contained prayers and incantations hoping that would cure their pain.
The Chinese actually believed a “tooth worm” was chewing away the tooth until it was gone. Normally the dentists from all over China go to different rural areas and provide free dental services to the children. Literate people help voluntarily in various ways to raise the awareness level of illiterate people. Open sessions are held to give instructions to children on how to brush teeth correctly and other important things regarding oral hygiene. Students also receive a toothbrush and a bookmark and teachers receive materials to present lessons on various aspects of oral care. It is a national holiday and the objective of the event is so beneficial that many international dentists couldn’t resist but applaud such an occasion.
