Digestive Acid Is Strong Enough To Dissolve Nail

Hydrochloric acid, which is used for the digestion of food in our abdomen, is strong enough to dissolve a nail.

It is really hard to believe that the acid which can dissolve a nail exists in your belly for the digestion of all your food. That acid is called Hydrochloric acid and it is so strong that it can dissolve a nail and can wash away the paint of a tile if exposed consistently!
The history of this imperative acid dates back to the middles ages when Jabir Ibn Hayan, a Muslim scientist, mentioned it for various purposes. It is also known as muriatic acid and does wonders because at different conditions, it reflects extreme to very average behavior.
It can be very harmful at times and can be very advantageous also. Hydrochloric acid can form chlorine, a toxic gas, when combined with bleach or potassium permanganate and can be dangerous to health if not handled without chemical retardants, PVC gloves and protective eyewear.

It is classified as a strong acid but one may wonder why hydrochloric acid isn’t harmful inside our belly. The reason being is that this acid can burn our stomach lining if it is not protected by mucous.
As mucous guards the stomach walls, hydrochloric acid helps us to digest our food and kill harmful bacteria. Still if the HCL exceeds a certain amount in our digestive system, it can cause bloating, belching, burning, flatulence and indigestion, so it is necessary to keep it in check. So HCL can be just as harmful inside your stomach as it is outside if your stomach is not protected properly.
